The Smallholding Diary

Dr. Elizabeth & The Herd

Between life as a busy working mum of four, my spare time belongs to our 5-acre smallholding here in Cornwall. It’s a bustling world shared with my herd of pygmy goats, our horse and two ponies, peacocks, chickens, and five very busy cats.

I want to share how accessible and rewarding keeping pygmy goats can be when done with the right knowledge and care..

Isla: A Life with Birds of Prey

Currently in Year 5, Isla is as passionate about birds of prey . She has grown up helping me with Chesney, our family Red-Tailed Hawk, and has recently taken on the role of 'mum' to her own White-Faced owl. She is currently hand-rearing and beginning the training for free flight.

Through Isla’s eyes, we want to show how a new generation can learn to respect and care for these magnificent birds properly and safely.

The Smallholding

Are Pygmy Goats easy to keep for beginners on a farm stay UK?

+

Pygmy goats are wonderful companions and very accessible for beginners, provided you have the right space and secure fencing. On our 5-acre Cornwall smallholding, Dr. Elizabeth has found that they thrive when kept in pairs. While they are "easy keepers," they do require a dedicated routine for hoof trimming and specialized nutrition. For those considering farm cottages or starting their own herd, we recommend a clear plan before their arrival.

What are the fundamental requirements for a healthy goat herd?

+

Consistency is key. A healthy herd requires draft-free shelter, access to fresh water, and a diet high in fiber. Dr. Elizabeth emphasizes the "Daily Five" health check—monitoring eyes, coat, and behavior to catch any subtle changes. If you are looking for farmstay near me options to learn these skills, visiting a working smallholding is the best first step.

Falconry & Birds of Prey

Can children learn to train birds of prey like Isla's White-Faced Owl?

+

Absolutely. As Isla (currently in Year 5) demonstrates, falconry is an incredible way for children to build focus and a profound respect for nature. Whether helping with our family Red-Tailed Hawk, Chesney, or hand-rearing her own White-Faced Owl, the process is about patience and trust. When done properly under expert supervision, it is a highly accessible hobby that brings the family together.

What is the most challenging part of hand-rearing an owl?

+

The commitment to timing and socialization. An owl being hand-reared for flight training requires constant, gentle interaction to bond with its keeper. Isla manages this daily alongside her schoolwork, showing that even a busy work mum and her family can integrate these magnificent creatures into a structured daily life.
