The cottage
What is Gwel-an-Derowen?
Gwel-an-Derowen is a two-bedroom holiday cottage on a working smallholding in west Cornwall, sleeping five, with a private hot tub, a log burner, ground source underfloor heating and solar power, stabling for two horses and grazing.
The name means view of the oaks. It is one cottage, on our farm, and everything below is about this building and this land rather than about Cornwall in general.
Marazion beach, below St Michael's Mount, is about fifteen minutes away by car.
The building
What is the cottage like inside?
It is a historic stone building converted to a high environmental standard, so it stays warm through the winter.
Ground source underfloor heating, solar power and a 7kW electric car charger do the work. Inside there is a log burner, a fifty inch television, Bluetooth speakers, fibre broadband, coffee facilities and a corner sofa that people do not get up from.
Outside, the terrace holds the private hot tub, which works best in the cold months.
How it sleeps
How many people does Gwel-an-Derowen sleep?
The cottage sleeps five, in two bedrooms, which is why it suits a family or a small group rather than two couples.

The main bedroom has a double bed. The second has a triple bunk, with a double below and a single above, and that is what takes the number from four to five.
The lounge has a large corner sofa that can be slept on. It is a light room with velux windows, so it suits somebody who does not mind an early sunrise. Ask for extra bedding and we will put it out.
The animals
Which animals can you meet at the cottage?
Ponies and pygmy goats live in the adjacent fields, there are eggs to collect if you want to, and wild birds cross the land on their own schedule.
Barn owls, tawny owls, buzzards, swallows and Canada geese all come and go. Children and dogs are secure in the garden, which is the question we are asked most and the reason the fencing is what it is.

The land
What is the land around the cottage like?
The land borders the upper reaches of the River Hayle, with a fire pit for marshmallows and, in summer, a stretch of river to paddle in.
It is a quiet stretch and shared space rather than a facility. Beyond the boundary are tree-lined bridleways and the neighbouring Godolphin Estate.

How far is Gwel-an-Derowen from the beach?
Marazion, and the beach below St Michael's Mount, is about fifteen minutes by car, and St Ives is a similar distance.
The cottage is tucked away on a smallholding and closer to things than that sounds. In August you can be fifteen minutes from the busiest places in Cornwall and not know it, and that is why people come.

Bringing a horse
Can you bring a horse to Gwel-an-Derowen?
Yes: there is stabling for two horses and grazing, and it is relaxed here rather than run as a livery yard.

Yes. Ground source underfloor heating and a log burner keep a building converted to a high environmental standard warm. Winter is a good time to come, and the hot tub is better in the cold.
